Varanasi to Sarnath: a one-day trip guide
Sarnath is where the Buddha is believed to have given his first sermon after attaining enlightenment, and it's an easy half-day addition to any Varanasi trip — close enough that it doesn't need an overnight stay.
Distance and travel time
Sarnath is about 10 km from central Varanasi, roughly a 25-30 minute drive depending on traffic near the old city. Shared autos, taxis and app-based cabs all run this route regularly.
What to see there
The Dhamek Stupa is the main structure and the reason most people visit. The Sarnath Archaeological Museum nearby holds the original Lion Capital — the emblem now used on India's national flag — along with other Mauryan and Buddhist-era artefacts. The Mulagandhakuti Vihara temple, with its Buddha-life murals, is a quieter stop most visitors add on.
Entry fees and timings
The Dhamek Stupa complex and the museum both charge a small entry fee for Indian visitors, with a higher fee for foreign nationals; the museum is closed on Fridays. Both sites are typically open from morning until early evening, so a 9 AM to 1 PM window comfortably covers everything without rushing.
Fitting it into your itinerary
Sarnath pairs naturally with the second morning of a 2-day Varanasi trip, right after your sunrise boat ride and before an afternoon flight or train. If you're on a 3-day trip, it's a relaxed half-day that leaves the rest of the day free for the old city lanes or a second boat ride.
