Namo Ghat is Varanasi's newest addition to its ancient riverfront — a large-scale, modern redevelopment completed in the 2020s, built with wide promenades, a dedicated cruise-boat jetty and step-free access that stands in deliberate contrast to the narrow, centuries-old steps further south.
Unlike the older ghats, which grew organically over hundreds of years under different royal patrons, Namo Ghat was purpose-built as a single modern project, with amenities like a children's park, an amphitheatre, parking and a jetty designed for larger cruise boats rather than the traditional wooden rowboats used elsewhere on the river. It has quickly become a practical entry and exit point for visitors arriving by road from the northern side of the city.
Its scale and modern design make it a useful counterpoint on a ghat tour — seeing it alongside the older ghats to the south gives a clear sense of how the riverfront has continued to evolve even as its religious core remains unchanged.
