Unique landmark temple

Bharat Mata Mandir

Unlike every other temple on this list, Bharat Mata Mandir has no idol at all — in place of a deity, its centrepiece is a large relief map of undivided India, carved in marble, laid out at floor level for visitors to walk around and study.

The map was commissioned in the independence era and inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi himself in 1936, and it remains a genuinely unusual sight: rivers, mountain ranges and regional boundaries rendered in careful marble relief rather than painted or printed.

Because it sits on the campus of Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith, a university founded during the independence movement, the temple carries a distinctly nationalist, educational character rather than a devotional one — it's as much a piece of history as a place of worship.

It's a quick stop, usually fifteen to twenty minutes, and works well paired with a visit to the nearby Durga Kund and Tulsi Manas temples if you're covering that part of the city in one trip.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an idol inside Bharat Mata Mandir?

No — the temple's centrepiece is a marble relief map of India rather than a deity, which makes it one of the more unusual stops in the city.
