Unlike most entries on this list, Lolark Kund isn't a temple building so much as a deep, stepped tank sunk well below street level โ one of the oldest continuously worshipped sacred sites in Varanasi, dedicated to Surya, the sun god.
The tank is reached by descending a long flight of stone steps cut into the ground, which gives it a very different feel from the riverside temples โ enclosed, quiet, and noticeably cooler than the streets above. It's especially crowded on Lolark Chhath, a festival in the Hindu month of Bhadrapada, when couples hoping for children traditionally bathe here.
Because it sits close to Assi Ghat, at the southern end of the main riverfront stretch, it's an easy add-on to a morning that starts with a boat ride or yoga session at Assi and continues with a walk through the surrounding lanes.
It's one of the lesser-visited spots on this list for casual tourists, which makes it a good choice if you're looking for something quieter and more local than the main pilgrimage circuit.
