Shiva TempleWithin the local tradition that maps each of the twelve all-India Jyotirlingas onto a corresponding shrine inside Kashi, Omkareshwar Mahadev here is treated as the city's own stand-in for the Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga on the Narmada river in Madhya Pradesh.
Pilgrims who can't make the longer journey to the original Omkareshwar often complete their Jyotirlinga circuit here instead, as part of a broader tradition in Kashi of hosting local equivalents to all twelve major Shiva shrines within the city itself.
The temple sits in the northern part of the old city, past Machhodari, in an area that sees considerably less tourist traffic than the central ghats — which generally means a calmer, less hurried darshan.
It's best combined with a visit to the nearby Adi Keshava temple, since both sit in the quieter northern stretch of the city, within a reasonably short distance of each other.
